# AI Setter - Away mode

## AI Setter: Suggestion Pills, Away Mode & AI Mode

**What it is** — This is the operational layer of Mochi's AI Setter: reply suggestions while you're actively working a conversation, full autonomous coverage while you're away, and the option to hand off an entire conversation — or a slice of your leads — to the AI outright.

**Who can use it** — Suggestion pills appear for anyone working a conversation they have access to. Away Mode can be toggled by a member for themselves, or by a **Manager** on a team member's behalf. Assigning leads directly to the AI (Stage 3) is set from `Settings > Team > Lead Distribution`, a Creator/Manager area.

**Before you start** — All of this is gated behind data. Your org needs AI Setter enabled and the Setter Playbook set up (see Set Up Your AI), plus enough accumulated conversation history — roughly the same \~500-message benchmark that unlocks the Playbook wizard itself.

### The three stages of AI Setter

Mochi's AI Setter rolls out in three stages, each requiring more data and configuration than the last:

1. **Suggestion Pills** — the AI drafts replies; you choose whether to send them.
2. **Away Mode** — the AI covers your conversations while you're offline.
3. **AI as a team member (Beta)** — the AI carries its own slice of leads, same as a human setter.

If you don't see a later stage yet, nothing is broken — your org likely hasn't accumulated enough conversation data to unlock it. Keep using Mochi and it will unlock.

### Stage 1: Suggestion pills

Above the composer, Mochi shows 2–3 AI-drafted replies for the conversation you're in, each based on your Creator DNA, your Setter Playbook, and how similar conversations have performed. Tap or click one to send it as-is, or edit it first — editing teaches the AI, so a correction today improves tomorrow's suggestions. This lives in the Inbox itself; see **AI Reply Suggestions** (Module 03) for the full composer mechanics, including the web keyboard shortcuts.

### Stage 2: Away Mode

Away Mode hands your conversations to the AI while you're offline, replying in your own voice and style via Creator DNA. It only covers **your own assigned leads** — it doesn't touch anyone else's inbox.

**Manual Away Mode:**

1. Set yourself (or have a Manager set you) to Away.
2. Choose a duration: **30 minutes, 1 hour, 2 hours, 4 hours, rest of the day, or tomorrow**.
3. Click **Return from away** when you're back to see a summary of what the AI handled while you were out.

While you're marked Away, the AI handles new incoming messages on your assigned leads automatically.

**Automatic (inactivity-based) Away Mode:** each member has a configurable idle timeout — **30 minutes by default**, adjustable anywhere from **1 minute to 24 hours**. If Away Mode is enabled for that person and they go inactive past their timeout, the AI takes over automatically until they're active again.

**Manager control:**

1. Go to `Settings > Team`.
2. Find the team member.
3. Toggle Away Mode and set a duration on their behalf.

Good use cases: lunch breaks, the gym, sleep, sick days, and timezone gaps where no human setter is online.

### Stage 3: AI as a team member (Beta)

Instead of only covering absent humans, you can give the AI its own standing share of leads. Assign it a percentage in `Settings > Team > Lead Distribution`, the same weighted-distribution screen used for human setters — the AI Setter is a distribution-eligible pseudo-member here, not a human seat on your team. Compare its performance against your human team, and scale its share up if it's outperforming — or back down if it isn't.

### AI Mode: hand off a single conversation

Beyond Away Mode's automatic coverage, you can hand off one specific conversation to the AI directly. Click the **lightning-bolt icon** in that chat's topbar to switch AI Mode on. The AI then takes over responding to new messages in that conversation specifically.

* AI-sent messages appear in **purple bubbles**, so anyone glancing at the thread can immediately tell which replies came from the AI.
* Click **View Reasoning** on an AI-sent message to see why it replied the way it did.
* Turn AI Mode off by clicking the toggle again, or simply by typing a reply yourself — sending a manual message is treated as a human-takeover signal.

### Tips

* Spot-check Away Mode and AI Mode activity periodically, especially early on — don't assume it's handling every conversation exactly the way you would. This is a holdover habit from a real (since-fixed) bug where Away/AI Mode could message leads already marked Unqualified; it's patched now, but periodic spot-checks are still good practice.
* Use the Return-from-Away summary to catch up fast instead of re-reading every conversation from scratch.
* Start AI-as-a-team-member with a modest lead percentage and scale up only once you've compared its results against your human setters.
* If suggestion pills seem generic, revisit your Setter Playbook and Creator DNA — the AI is only as sharp as what it's been given to learn from.

### Common mistakes & fixes

| Mistake | Fix |
| --------------------------------------------------------------- | ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ |
| Assuming Away Mode covers the whole inbox | It only covers that person's own assigned leads — give the AI its own distribution % if you want broader coverage. |
| Not realizing typing a manual reply hands the conversation back | Typing in AI Mode is a takeover signal — expect it to switch control to you. |
| Treating suggestion pills as auto-send | Mochi never sends a suggestion on its own — you always choose to send or edit. |
| Ignoring View Reasoning when a suggestion looks off | Check it before assuming it's a bug — it often explains a legitimate read on the conversation you missed. |

### Limits & good to know

* AI as a team member is in **Beta**.
* Every stage here is gated by accumulated conversation data — a brand-new org won't have access to Away Mode or AI Mode on day one.
