# Tracking links and attribution

## Tracking Links & Attribution

**What it is** — A Mochi tracking link is a short, branded URL (like `moch.me/free-training`) that redirects to any destination you choose — a booking page, a sales page, a free download. Because every click runs through Mochi first, you can see exactly who clicked, when, and from where. Links are powered behind the scenes by Dub.

**Who can use it** — Everyone on the team, on both web and iOS. (Custom branded domains, covered separately, are Creator/Manager only and web-only — see Custom Branded Link Domain.)

### Why it matters

A raw link tells you nothing. A Mochi tracking link ties every click back to a specific lead and conversation, so you know exactly which leads engaged with what you sent. Clicks land on the lead's timeline, feed your dashboard click metrics, and can trigger automations — like a follow-up that only fires if a link was sent but never clicked.

Mochi's own internal analysis — looking across a sample of 435,000+ links sent to 250,000+ unique leads — found that 72.7% of leads who went on to book a call had received a link from a setter at some point, and that link activity was roughly 4x more predictive of a booked call than any other single signal Mochi tracks. Treat that as Mochi's own finding from its own usage data, not a guarantee for your account — but it's a solid reason to route links through Mochi rather than around it.

### Every link is unique

No two people ever get a byte-identical Mochi link. Each tracked link carries its own slug, unique per lead, per setter, and per organization — even when ten different leads click through to the exact same destination, each of them gets a different short link.

This isn't only for cleaner analytics. Instagram's spam detection can flag an account for sending identical text and links to many people in a short window, and a unique link per recipient is one of the ways Mochi helps reduce that risk. See Account safety & Instagram limits for the full picture on link-related account safety.

### Creating a link

**Web:**

1. Open Dashboard > Links.
2. Create a link: set the destination URL and, optionally, a custom slug.

**iOS:**

1. Go to Settings > Content Hub.
2. Tap the add menu and choose **New Link**.
3. Keep **Track clicks** on to get analytics.

### Sending a tracked link

The easiest way is to paste your destination URL directly into a DM in the Inbox composer — with smart-link conversion on, Mochi automatically turns it into a tracked short link before it sends. You can also insert an existing saved link from your Content Hub, or from the `/` slash menu in the composer. On iOS, open the composer, tap the add or slash menu, and pick the link.

### What gets tracked

Each send records whether it was clicked, when it was first clicked, total click count, and rough location and device info. The lead's timeline shows link-sent and link-clicked events. For full analytics, open Dashboard > Links (web) and click into any link.

### Inserting from Content Hub

Save frequently-used links — lead magnets, booking pages, sales pages — in Content Hub once, then insert them into any conversation with the `/` slash menu instead of retyping or re-pasting them every time.

### Bot-click filtering

Mochi automatically filters out bot clicks (scanners, link previews, crawlers) so your click numbers reflect real people, not noise.

### Tips

* Always send links through Mochi — a raw link that was never converted into a Mochi short link records zero clicks, even if the destination is correct.
* Once a URL has been converted into a Mochi short link, it stays tracked even if that short link gets pasted somewhere else afterward.
* Name your links clearly when you create them (e.g. "Free training — story CTA") so they're easy to find again in Dashboard > Links or Content Hub.

### Common mistakes & fixes

| Mistake | Fix |
| ----------------------------------------------- | --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| Pasted a raw link instead of letting it convert | Always send through the composer with smart-link conversion on, or insert a saved Content Hub link. |
| Expecting clicks on a link shared outside Mochi | Only clicks that route through a Mochi short link are tracked. |
| Can't find click data for a link | Open Dashboard > Links (web) and click into the specific link. |

### Limits & good to know

* Default links live on the shared `moch.me` domain. For your own branded subdomain instead, see Custom Branded Link Domain (web-only, gated beta).
* Bot clicks are filtered out, not counted, so your numbers should reflect real engagement.
